Lovely (but dumb) Football by Onitsuka Tiger

Just for the record and because there has been some discussion going on in this blog: in my opinion a dumb and uncool campaign from Onitsuka Tiger for its football shoes. It is kind of a mixture between wanna-be Zomtec coolness (remember the Bifi Sausage?) and klischee-like karaoke. There are commercials that are so dumb, they’re funny but this one isn’t. Is this at least successful in Asia? What do you think?

Guerilla Bowling on the Streets

As of last month, bowling has significantly increased in Ghent, Belgium. The cause: a new guerilla campaign aimed for the area around the “Overpoort Bowl”, a popular bowling alley right in the heart of the student’s neighbourhood.

Video Comparison: Intel-Mac + Postal Service Music Video

Apple’s new commercial for the Intel-Macs - like the controversial iPod ad - seems to have used a music video by “The Postal Service” as inspiring example. The video shows very similar pictures and cuts, especially the scene where the woman looks into the man’s eyes. Here is a video comparing the two, side-by-side. On the left is the apple clip, on the right the music video. By accident? Again?

Update: The similarities are no accident: both videos have been produced by Josh & Xander, reports The Culf of Mac. Postal Service’s label told yesterday the video has not been licensed and they didn’t know about it till Apple’s Intel-Mac release.

Ex-Daewoo profits from Chevrolet image

The name change of Korean General Motors company Daewoo in “Chevrolet” serves as distribution boost. In Eastern Europe car sales exploded by 370 percent and merchandising with caps, etc. also saw a strong increase. The “mythos” Chevrolet has worked perfectly, says Austrian import chief Michael Röck.

Existing customers are even willing to pay 200 € to “upgrade” their Daewoo car with Chevrolet logos and labels. Crazy.

MacBook Pro - Apple Changes Naming

MacBook Pro Naming

People in the blogosphere are unsure why Apple has changed its naming from Powerbook to MacBook. Here’s Steve Jobs official statement:

“It’s a new name because we’re kinda done with ‘Power’ and because we want ‘Mac’ in the name of our products.”

This would imply that the MacBook name may not only replace the PowerBook but the iBook as well. Also raises some questions about the continued use of the “PowerMac” name.

Kodak’s New Logo

For the sixth time and joining the recent rebrandings of Intel, at&t and Visa, Eastman Kodak Co. is introducing a new corporate logo designed to help the company forge a new image as a cutting-edge, 21st century innovator.

The box is gone, thus simplifying the logo mark. Above and below the rounded type font are two yellow bars. In my point of view Kodak is giving up a very recognizable logo and replacing it by a non-distinct one.

Update: The yellow horizontal bars that originally accompanied the logo image have been removed, as they are not officially part of the logo. However, the yellow will still be part of the overall identity and implementation.

Saturn, an electronic store chain here in Europe, has released a rather simple-minded but still nationally funny commercial.

Basically the message is: “We don’t talk you into bullsh*t but recommend the coolest products for the best price”. Jung von Matt Austria worked with 3D-specialist Soulcage Department to create this animated movie.
